Transgender Day of Remembrance

Honoring Lives Lost to Violence

Every year on November 20th, we observe the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) to honor transgender individuals who have lost their lives due to anti-transgender violence. This day was established by Gwendolyn Ann Smith in 1999 to commemorate Rita Hester, a Black trans woman who was tragically murdered in Boston.

Gwendolyn Ann Smith reminds us, “TDOR highlights the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. We must remember those we’ve lost and continue fighting for justice.”

Now, 25 years later, TDOR is part of Trans Awareness Week, where organizations like Transtastic host events to raise visibility and address issues facing the transgender community.

Why is TDOR crucial? This year alone, there have been 331 reported killings of trans individuals worldwide, including the murder of Amy Griffiths, a trans woman from Worcestershire. Trans people, especially trans women, people of color, and those working in the sex industry, are often targets of violence.

This violence must end. Whether you are transgender or an ally, there are many ways to get involved—whether it’s attending or organizing a vigil, or supporting campaigns for safer workplaces for trans individuals.

Let’s stand together and remember those we’ve lost while advocating for a safer, more inclusive future.
